Day trip to Tortilla Flats, Mesa, Arizona

We are camped in Mesa, Arizona for the week in a fairly basic camp although it is cheap at $130.00 for a week. It has everything we need and is very convenient for visits to Scottsdale shopping and  golf.

Today we met up with a friend of Robie and Sharon, a nice lady Alice whom we have met briefly years ago in Salem Oregon, Alice had arranged for all of us to do a day drive to Tortilla Flats in the Supersticion Mountains and what a glorious day out it has been.

From Mesa we drove east through Apache Flats into the Superstition mountains which are 3,000 feet high and have an amazing desert appeal, below are some of the many photos we have taken today. (I will add more comments later.

Betty's Contribution: As Tom mentioned, the weather was indeed beautiful. As Arizona creeps towards Summer, we were lucky to see lots of the Saguaro Cactus in bloom - they look like they are holding little posies of flowers in their "hands". Prickly Pear catcus are in abundance here and they are quite lovely with their yellow flowers which are surprisingly like a normal flower and not at all dry.

We lunched at a cute place at Tortilla Flats where customers have to "saddle" up at the bar - yup, the bar stools are saddles. It was quite a challenge for me to get on one of them - y'all know how tall I am, right?

The road condition up the mountains was excellent and we were rewarded with stunning views of Canyon Lake and the glorious hues of the different sandstone on the mountains. There are some hairpin bends which would do the "Top Gear" crew proud.. However we were Alices's capable hands and felt quite safe. This lady is a fountain of information.

Signing off for today..Nanu Nanu!
